This kind of thing makes me proud to hang out with these guys.
National Review Calls for Trent Lott's resignation. I don't think Lott really is a racist or pro-segregationist, but expressing regret about the political setbacks to Jefferson Davis and the Dixiecrats shows a lack of political wisdom. Political in the good sense of reaching out to the groups that compose society in order to form a concensus, and Lott's comments raise doubts as to his good intentions. [The comments are really shocking, in truth. It's as if some German politician were expressing regret that there has been a delay in achieving the ideals of the Nazi administration.] It's good to see that the Right is living up to its principles and political common sense. But I suspect this is what happens when the levers of media culture are in the hands of the opposition. The Right knows it will be pilloried by the usual list if it doesn't act with principle, whereas the Left during the Clinton years was truly surprised to find that the transgressions of the Clinton administration were not swept under the rug.
