The Curley Effect

"Third worst economic environment for middle class families" is not a bug in the policy goals of California Democrats, it is a feature to make sure that California's have permanent hegemonic control over California in the same way that Democrats have control over Baltimore, Detroit and Chicago.

Worse yet — upwards of one-third of the state population subsists near or in poverty.//

Sort of supports my theory that liberal cities are enacting policies intended to drive out middle class residents.

Democrat pols turn felonies and eliminate bail to make sure that Democrat felons can vote in elections.

Democrat felon voters elect Dems and kill Republican voters.

Are policies that let the homeless use downtowns as public urinals part of the Curley Effect?

This is an absurd story, but it sparked two thoughts.

//he area surrounding King County Superior Court includes a homeless shelter and other social-services organizations and has become an “unsanitary and potentially frightening” scene — one “that reeks of urine and excrement” — according to an article in the Seattle Times. Desperate for help with the disgusting environment, two of the court’s judges have asked the city to please power-wash the poop-covered sidewalks. That seems like a pretty reasonable request, but apparently, one councilman is worried that doing so might be a form of microaggression. According to the Times, Councilmember Larry Gossett “said he didn’t like the idea of power-washing the sidewalks because it brought back images of the use of hoses against civil-rights activists.”//

First, Seattle has this problem also???

I've been laughing about the fact that San Francisco has a human excrement map and I've known that downtown LA smells like a urinal, but if Seattle has the same problem, I have to start wondering about how common this problem is for Democrat-controlled urban areas.

Second, why is this not a problem for Fresno.  I've never seen or smelled any indication of this problem for poor, hot, rainless Fresno. What magic does Fresno have that LA, San Francisco and Seattle don't have?

Could it be that Fresno is a middle-class city that generally elects Republicans?  And as such, could it be that mayor's office includes middle-class sensibilities among the values that it wants to serve?

So, could the indifference of large, democrat-controlled cities to public sanitation issues simply be another example of the Curley Effect in operation?

Another application of "the Curley Effect."

Democrat controlled cities have used social policy to create a Democrat electorate, which is why most of those cities are corrupt and impoverished.

California is doing the same thing statewide.

And it seems that university education is doing the same thing.

Conservative student quits Evergreen College; pens not to leftist professor who opposed identity politics.

Can't have a "safe space" without driving away anyone who disagrees with the totalitarian mindset.

This provides a description of the Curley Effect.

"It is generally thought in economics [that] [g]ood policies bring in resources and voters; bad ones keep them out. With the Curley effect, this result is reversed. When politicians seeking to stay in power use distortionary policies to force out their political opponents, [it] renders bad policies more, rather than less, attractive. The Curley effect, and more generally the economics of shaping the electorate, might thus shed light on a broad range of government policies that appear too bad to be true from alternative perspectives."

When I say the blue states are in a depression, I don’t mean the collective funk they are in because they lost the election to Donald Trump.

I’m talking about an economic depression in the blue states that went for Hillary. Here is an amazing statistic. Of the 10 blue states that Hillary Clinton won by the largest percentage margins — California, Massachusetts, Vermont, Hawaii, Maryland, New York, Illinois, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut — every single one of them lost domestic migration (excluding immigration) over the last 10 years (2004-14). Nearly 2.75 million more Americans left California and New York than entered these states.

They are the loser states. They are all progressive. High taxes rates. High welfare benefits. Heavy regulation. Environmental extremism. Super minimum wages. Most outlaw energy drilling. The whole left-wing playbook is on display in the Hillary states. And people are leaving in droves. Day after day, they are being bled to death. So much for liberalism creating a worker’s paradise.

Now let’s look at the 10 states that had the largest percentage vote for Donald Trump. Everyone of them — Wyoming, West Virginia, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Dakota, and Idaho — was a net population gainer.

This is part and parcel of one of the greatest internal migration waves in American history as blue states especially in the northeast are getting clobbered by their low tax, smaller government rivals in the south, southeast and mountain regions.

By the way, pretty much the same pattern holds true for jobs. The job gains in the red states carried by the widest margins by Mr. Trump had about twice the job creation rate as the bluest states carried by Hillary.//

I wonder what those different states have in common other than one party Democrat dominance?

     Nancy Pelosi and the Curley Effect.


    Although I praise the Democrat's brave insistence on sticking with Nancy Pelosi as House Minority Leader, I have also questioned how this can actually occur given the string of devastating losses that she has presided over.

     It has occurred to me that Nancy Pelosi's survival is actually a classic example of what is called "The Curley Effect," which refers to the practice of using policy to reshape the electorate.  Thus, Mayor Curley of Boston - like virtually all other big city Democrat mayors - enacted policies that drove off productive members of society, thereby reshaping their cities into the pestilential swamps of crime and unemployment that would vote Democrat for generations.

   Similarly, by enacting Obamacare and other unpopular legislation, Pelosi has engineered the loss of moderate Democrats, thereby shaping her electorate - Members of Congress - into hard core, doctrinaire leftwingers who would vote for her no what damage it does to the Democrat party.

   In short, well played, Madame.

   Well played.

So, why aren't there demands that Governor Brown or President Obama disavow this blatantly divisive and unconstitutional movement?

Liberal Californian's dream of secession will end in nightmare.

Maybe because this is part of the Curley Effect?

Unfortunately, that means taxpayers and business owners.

But the good news is that you get 50 years of Democrat governance over a crime-ridden cesspit.

Why are Democrat run cities such cesspools of dysfunction?

Because it filters out the riff-raff who won't keep voting Democrats back into power.

...restrictive land use laws make states more liberal.

//But California’s failure to curb its overweening land use regulations migh also have another, less obvious, consequence: It could make the state even more homogeneously Democratic than it already is. According to a recent study from Jason Sorens of Dartmouth University (h/t Tyler Cowen), states’ land use regulations don’t just affect their economies; they affect their political complexions as well. In particular, Republicans seem to leave states as they tighten their zoning laws:
High cost of living deters in-migration of lower-income households, especially those that do not highly value amenities. Holding median household income constant, higher-cost locations will tend over time to attract and keep households that highly value amenities. It is hypothesized that these households will be more Democratic. Accordingly, raising residential building requirements in high-amenity areas should cause those areas to move gradually to the left.

In other words, Democrats, on balance, seem to be willing to pay a higher premium to live in heavily zoned communities, while Republicans would rather live somewhere with fewer amenities at lower cost. Sorens doesn’t determine why this is, but it’s possible to speculate: Perhaps Republicans are more likely to homeschool and therefore less concerned with school quality; perhaps they are more likely to drive and less concerned with public transportation; perhaps they place less value on a community being “environmentally friendly.”

Regardless of the precise mechanism, Sorens’ study drives home an important point: Coastal blue state NIMBYs aren’t just exacerbating segregation by income; they are exacerbating segregation by political affiliation as well. These patterns continue in a vicious cycle, and America keeps coming apart.//
