Signs of Intelligent Life at Democratic Underground.

There is some dissent occurring at DU - until they remove the posts - on the subject of whether leftists should be happy about democracy, even if it's promoted by Republicans. What may be interesting to science fiction fans is a DU post by "Joatsimeon" who lays down this intelligent riff:

"Everyone knows Saddam was basically a CIA agent who was installed and supported by the US."

-- how odd that we ended up fighting two wars against him, then. I knew the CIA weren't infallible, but that's a bit slipshod even for Langley... glyph of irony.

For those who really want to know, I suggest looking up the history of the Ba'athist party. Short form, it's a classic fascist integralist-nationalist party founded in the 20's and 30's by admirers of Mussolini and Hitler.

Incidentally, Saddam was consistently aligned with the USSR during the Cold War. Did you wonder where all those T-72 tanks came from?

This is the sort of nonsense that gives Democrats a bad name.

"and the protection of Israel"

-- which is bad... why? Unless you're of the "death to the Jews" faction?

"I'm not going to believe for one moment the US will let the vote carry any weight that would actually help Iraqi people."

-- Dude, life is not a zero-sum game. The fact that the US benefits does not mean that Iraqis are hurt. Quite the contrary.

To give you an example, the US benefits economically and strategically from our close alliances with, eg., South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

These are all prosperous, democratic countries which in turn benefit from being under our security umbrella. They benefit. We benefit. Everyone's happy except al-Zawqari and his ilk.

"When one country invades and colonizes another, their will be people who fight back."

-- which is why we're plagued by German, Japanese and South Korean suicide bombers?

Joatsimeon is S.M. Stirling, the alternative history author of the Draka novels, the Nantucket novels and the Peshawar Lancers.

Now, if the gauchistas would just listen to him, there might be hope.
