Not to speak ill of the dead, but...

...Fred Phelps - the Founder of Westboro Baptist Church - was a liberal Democrat.

//Fred Phelps is dead.  I met Phelps once during the 1990 Kansas governor race.  What many do not know about Phelps is that he was active in Civil Right law in the state of Kansas during the 1960’s and he was a registered Democrat; a man of the left only he was a leftist who hated gays.  During the 1990 election, the economy and taxes were the main issues as many Kansans saw their tax bill go up as result of changes in property taxes based on new constitutional amendments passed years earlier and just then taking effect. //

//His gay crusade began in earnest after his failed governor’s race but even after the gay campaign took off, he managed to grab 30% in a Democratic primary in 1992!  And it should be noted, Phelps was a creation of the media and while the media forever gave attention to his anti-gay view point, they often ignored his Democratic and liberal viewpoints on other issues.  His anti-American attitude was another thing often ignored and quite bluntly, much of worldview that America was the root of all evil mirrored a good portion of the political left.  This was a man who along with many of his parishioners protested America being in Baghdad in 1997.  His attack on the American military or his protest at their funerals simply reinforced that this guy hated his country.  While he would claim we were witnessing God’s judgment, it should be noted that much of his anger was often pointed at those who defended his right to be an ass.//

I always wondered why Phelps mirrored the position of the hard-core anti-war left.
